Clinton High School Putting Finishing Touches on Sports Upgrades

The Clinton School District has been implementing a two-year plan to overhaul the high school's sports facilities.

Clinton High School Athletic Director Matt Koeppel explains that the plans began with the renovation of the six-lane track to an eight-lane track, the installation of turf on the football field, and the relocation of the bleachers, followed by the rebuilding of the press box.

The most recent update includes turfing of the varsity softball and baseball fields. Koeppel is excited those are nearly complete.

Koeppel thanks the City of Clinton for its involvement in the baseball and softball complex renovations. It was an expiring TIF district that provided the funding for those installations. He believes it will have a great impact on the community as a whole.

Clinton Schools Superintendent Drew Goebel indicates the City is covering some aspects of the major project, while the school district is covering the rest, including the estimated $4 million that it took just for the football field, track, and lights.

There are still some finishing touches to put on the facilities. Koeppel notes rubber was still being laid on the baseball and softball fields, and the new scoreboard at the football field is about to be installed.

The updates to the sports facilities began last summer with the turfing of the football field and the renovation of the track. Koeppel believes with the new updates, the complex will be second to none.

IHSA Still Needs Officials

It's a persistent challenge - finding officials to work Illinois High School Association games.

According to IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson, the shortage is trending in the right direction, but it remains challenging across 16 different sports.

The IHSA recorded a decline in physical officials in 2025 but noted an increase in licenses, which is a positive sign. To address the issue, the IHSA plans to host an official conference on July 11-12 in Bloomington-Normal.

HS Baseball: Monticello Falls Short to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin

In a game heard on WEZC and online at dewittdailynews.com, a terrific baseball season came to an end for Monticello as they fell short to Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 4-3 in a Class 2A Supersectional high school baseball thriller from Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

Andy Attonacci capped a big start for the Cycles with a two-run home run in the first inning.

Monticello would battle back, taking advantage of SHG miscues in the third and fourth innings to tie the game at 3-3.

The Cyclones got the ultimate winning run across in the bottom of the fourth on a Drew Ward sac-fly to center field to make it 4-3.

Monticello veered from Carter Foran on the mound to start the game, who had been terrific in the postseason, electing to turn to junior Heyden Romano. Romano did not record an out, and all four of the batters he faced reached base, three scored.

But the Sages were rescued by sophomore Matthias Rudolph, who pitched five innings of one-run ball and kept Monticello in the game and allowed them to come back. Rudolph's five innings earned him the ServPro of Piatt/DeWitt Counties Player of the Game.

Monticello finishes the season 30-7 overall.
