(SRN NEWS) – The conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces has sharply escalated after a missile attack targeted Riyadh and Saudi oil infrastructure. Although Saudi Arabia said the missile was intercepted, explosions and a fire were reported near Riyadh’s airport, while the Houthis claimed responsibility for attacks on sensitive sites in Riyadh and Aramco facilities in Yanbu.

The United States warned that the fighting could “escalate rapidly” and advised Americans to reconsider travel to the region. President Donald Trump unexpectedly ended his weekend at Camp David and returned to the White House, though officials gave no explanation.

The attacks represent a significant psychological turning point because Riyadh had not been directly threatened since the Yemen conflict resumed. Saudi Arabia has carried out numerous airstrikes in response but has failed to halt the Houthis’ territorial advances. The violence has also disrupted oil exports, maritime traffic, and shipping through the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The broader regional crisis has drawn in the United States, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Hezbollah, and other actors. With the Strait of Hormuz reportedly blockaded and the Yemen truce collapsed, Yemen has become one of the most active fronts in the wider Middle East conflict. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced, and further attacks on airports, fuel facilities, and populated areas could make the conflict much harder to contain.
